Through 30 movements of mathematics and acrobatics, the bass line of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations stands constant, a staunch pillar of infrastructure undergirding one of Western art music’s wildest (yet most logical) exercises in transformation. With Bassline Fabulous, the Catalyst Quartet—The Met’s ’22-’23 Quartet in Residence—takes an immersive dive into the behemoth keyboard work, presenting the acclaimed Goldberg arrangement that anchored their very first recording in 2014. “Theatrical genius” (The New Yorker) Machine Dazzle responds to the Quartet’s performance in real time with a performance-installation, interpreting the music’s inescapable evolution through a personal, emotional lens.
